Despite having started CrossFit in only 2015, Dani Speegle has quickly moved up through the ranks to become one of the top female CrossFitters in the world. With an impressive showing in her first CrossFit Games in 2019, we look forward to seeing what the future has in store for her.
An Introduction to Dani Speegle, CrossFit Athlete
Dani Speegle is also known as Dani Elle Speegle. Or, you may also see her social media handle: dellespeegle. She is a former athlete that has played a ton of sports, from soccer to diving, to track + field, volleyball and gymnastics. This is similar to many other top CrossFit athletes with active backgrounds such as Margaux Alvarez CrossFit, and also including her idol Brooke Ence and it’s been quite a natural transition for her to this sport.
When not in the gym, she’s usually planning, cooking or eating her next meal! To chill out, you can often find her reading, or no Netflix.
She credits her coach at CrossFit OwnIt, Asante Richards for much of her success. He spent countless hours walking her through the basics of the sport and teaching her the correct techniques. He was also the one who encouraged her to enter CrossFit competitions beginning in 2015 because he thought she had what it took to make it far in the sport. She credits Richards with much of her success in the CrossFit world.
The Switch from Gymnastics
Many of the top female CrossFit athletes got their start in gymnastics. Dani Speegle is no exception, but her 10 year career ended abruptly when she suffered a back injury from a miss on the uneven bards. When this door closed, the door to team sports opened like track + field, soccer and volleyball and she was able to compete in these relatively pain-free.
She calls herself a fierce competitor which is evident when you see her compete with the fittest in the world! As far as training goes, she says that hard work and consistency is what it’s all about. Even when she doesn’t feel like working out, she’s do it anyway and she sticks to her plan, no matter what it takes. She certainly has the mental toughness necessary to be one of the top CrossFit athletes in the world!
As far as training goes, Dani’s favourite activities are heavy compound weights that help her get stronger. She pairs this with isolation movements and conditioning work that target specific areas. Dani Elle Speegle tries to chip away at her weaknesses over time while focusing on her strengths.
She usually works out 5-6x a week and anywhere from 3-5 hours/day. She’ll have one day of active rest and then one day of complete rest each week.
As far as what she likes to see in competition, her ideal workout would consist of any of the following exercises: handstand walks, heavy snatches, dumbbells and sandbags. She doesn’t look forward to running events!

She’s been competing in competitions since 2016 and quickly moved up the rungs year over year to quietly become one of the top athletes in the world.
In 2018, she achieved her first major breakthrough, winning the 2018 South East Regional CrossFit event.
In 2019, Dani posted some very impressive results, coming in 5th worldwide for the CrossFit open and 1st in the USA. That same year, she placed 27th at the CrossFit Games during her first time competing in this prestigious competition.

What does she eat to power her impressive performances? Let’s find out!
Mainly, she tries to eat cleanly and follows the philosophy of everything in moderation. She’s described her diet as “Paleo-ish.” That is, it’s Paleo until it’s not!
Everything in moderation is her #1 rule as far as diet and nutrition goes. She generally eats very healthy foods, but will cheat once in a while purely for enjoyment.
She makes a point to not eat things like fast food and soda. And she’s added in some supplements like BCAAs, creatine, and whey protein. And, the rest? She goes for natural, whole foods that you can pronounce all the ingredients for!
